The Finnish court system consists of local courts, regional appellate courts, a Supreme Court, and a Supreme Administrative Court. Finns also formed a significant proportion of the first “Swedish”settlers in 17th-century America. The U.S. Embassy in Helsinki cannot assist private U.S. citizens in obtaining any necessary visas for neighboring countries, including Russia and the former Soviet Union. In particular, U.S. citizens who reside in these countries and who plan to renew their visas or residence permits in Finland should keep this in mind when making their plans.
